Back-to-school season always feels like a little reset.
New teachers. New classrooms. New routines. New friends. And for many of us raising bilingual kids, it can also mean a whole lot more English entering our children’s everyday lives.
That’s completely okay.
I don’t think we need to worry about keeping Vietnamese and English perfectly balanced. Instead, I like to think about the little pockets of time where Vietnamese can continue to live alongside everything else.
Maybe it’s a Vietnamese song playing in the car on the way to school.
Maybe it’s reading a Vietnamese-English book together before bed.
Maybe it’s coloring and chatting about the pictures in Vietnamese after school.
Maybe it’s simply asking, “Hôm nay con đi học vui không?” and listening to whatever answer comes back.
Those little moments still count.
That’s why I put together a small Back-to-School Vietnamese Kit for Vietnamese-speaking and bilingual families. I wanted to make it easy to bring a little Vietnamese into this busy season without adding another “assignment” to your list.
Inside the kit and on the blog, you’ll find:
- Free Vietnamese back-to-school coloring pages to download and enjoy together 🎨
- A Vietnamese song playlist for car rides, mornings, or anytime you want some Vietnamese in the background 🎶
- Vietnamese bilingual books for simple, meaningful reading time together 📚
You don’t have to do all three. You don’t have to do them every day.
Just keep finding little ways to make Vietnamese part of your family’s everyday life.
Because when English becomes a bigger part of their world at school, it doesn’t mean Vietnamese has to become smaller at home.
Chúc các bé một năm học mới thật vui! 💛
And to all the bilingual parents: you’re doing enough. Keep going! 🎉
